Art and Design at St John the Evangelist Catholic Academy

Intent

Our art lessons and structured and sequenced to ensure that children experience the skills required to meet the aims of the national curriculum. Here at St John’s, we aim to spark the curiosity of our children enabling them to express themselves through their own art. Whilst exploring and being inspired by that of others, both great and modern artists.

Children will learn and develop confidence and proficiency in a variety of techniques, producing creative and imaginative work.

Implementing

Our pupils will explore a variety of techniques and skills through different units of work carried out in each year group. Teachers often use a thematic approach and try to make links to other areas of the curriculum, providing depth and a different dimension to learning. Children will continually revisit prior knowledge but also acquire new knowledge as they progress on their artistic journey.

Impact

Art and design is enjoyed by teachers and pupils across the school. Teachers ensure that the children have a wide range of experiences and develop competence in using different mediums to produce quality work. Children improve their enquiry skills and further develop inquisitiveness whilst exploring a variety of techniques. Producing art enhances resilience and perseverance, key life skills which we want all our children to adopt. Evaluating final pieces allows the children to analyse and communicate thoughts and opinions.
